trendStrengthIndex(input)Measures the absolute gap between a fast and a slow EMA of the close in units of average true range, so the spread is comparable across volatility regimes.
Parameters#
| Name | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
input | TopicInput | bars is the OHLCV series, validated for finite prices, strictly increasing timestamp, a single adjustment basis, non-negative volume, and a high and low that bracket the other prices. From parameters this topic reads fast_period (integer, minimum 2, default 7), slow_period (integer, default 21, and required to be at least fast_period plus 1), and period (integer, minimum 2, default 14) for the average true range in the denominator. |
Returns#
TopicResult
series and latest carry a single value key, a non-negative ratio. A bar is null when the average true range is zero. The slow EMA dominates the warm-up.
Warm-up#
The first slow_period - 1 bars (20 by default) positions are null. The slow EMA resolves at index slow_period - 1, later than both the fast EMA and the average true range at the defaults, so with 21 and 14 indices 0 to 19 are null and ready_at is 20.
Errors#
- When
parameters.slow_periodis not an integer of at leastfast_periodplus 1 — throws Error - When
parameters.fast_periodorparameters.periodis present but is not an integer of at least 2 — throws Error - When
barsis empty, or a bar has a non-finite price, a negative volume, a timestamp not greater than the previous one, or a high below its open, low, or close — throws Error
Complexity: time O(n),
space O(n).

executed Captured by running this function on the input its own test provides. Real output of real code — but not asserted against a published figure.

How it works#
This page states the contract — how to call it correctly. The article explains the concept: why it works, and where it breaks.
